The Milan offices are housed in the prestigious Turati Tower designed by architect Luigi Mattioni in 1958. Architecturally, the building is structured as a multifunctional tower and takes inspiration from Gropius’s American model of the Pan Am Building (1956). The tower is supported by a structural grid where its pillars are arranged along the building perimeter and around the central core – occupied by elevators and service rooms – in order to avoid cluttering the central areas and to permit maximum flexibility in terms of distribution. This planimetric freedom is contrasted by a rigid basic module designed for the facade, which Mattioni had already been experimenting with at the Diaz centre and which was re-proposed here. Recently redeveloped, it houses the Church of Sant’Agostino and the back of the 14th-century palazzo of the same name, formerly a monastery and now the headquarters of the Salerno Provincial Administration with its main front facade overlooking the Trieste seafront.
